The Indianapolis Star is looking to hire a Sports Content Coach. This position is one of two Sports Content Coaches who will direct the creation of sharp, forward-thinking digital and print content for the IndyStar, a Top 10 APSE newspaper. This editor will plan and oversee coverage of the Indy 500, high school and college sports and recruiting. Must be able to guide reporters in developing video, digital and print storytelling; to help IndyStar engage and grow an audience on social media platforms; and to work with marketing to identify our target audience's needs and attract new users. Big picture, this editor will coordinate with the sports news director and reporters to ensure a robust and energetic content plan for the department. We want someone ready and raring to make our products better.



  • Plans and oversees execution of coverage of the Indy 500, high school and college sports and recruiting.

  • Works with reporters to identify moments when a big content push is appropriate. Consults with marketing partner and sports news director to identify the current audience and its needs/wants, and to identify opportunities to attract new users.The goal is to delight loyal followers so they engage more often and more deeply, while also building the audience overall.

  • Helps identify opportunities for new products to serve customers.

  • Coordinates with sports news director and reporters to ensure a great overall content plan for the department. Works with reporters, other IndyStar content coaches, digital producers and content coaches at other Indiana Gannett properties to edit and plan sports content. Coordinates with other Indiana Gannett papers to generate/share regional sports content.

  • Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.

    Required Skills:

  • Bachelor's in Communications, Journalism or equivalent in experience and education.

  • Five years of media management experience.

  • Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.

  • Experience editing and shaping watchdog and investigative journalism.
