The Register-Guard, a 60,000-circulation morning daily, is seeking to hire a lead sports columnist to be the voice of its nationally recognized sports department. We're looking for an independent thinker and self-starter who will offer readers provocative and thoughtful analysis and opinion, and who possesses the writing touch to deliver the human element in both column and feature writing. We're looking for a hard-working team player with a competitive drive who will help define our section by taking a leading role in print, online and social media. Our top priority is local sports, with an emphasis on University of Oregon athletics.

At least five years of sports-writing experience for a daily newspaper and graduation from a four-year college or university required; experience as a sports columnist strongly helpful, but so is the ability to provide expert, literate, informed opinions on sports.

Salary range is $1,147.80 – $1,264.50 per week

The local UO crackpots turned on predecessor George Schroeder when he had the audacity to blast the school's ridiculous access policies, its paranoid SID department, or when he even mention the NCAA sanctions (handed down after he left).

Very solid paper, but with the departure of Rob Mosely to the aforementioned paranoid SID department, with the retirement of veteran Bob Clark and the loss of veteran Curtis Anderson, who took another job in the area, the R-G recently lost three aces off its starting staff.

I think they did follow through. I applied in June and got my rejection letter in the mail yesterday.

Having been an unsuccessful applicant at that newspaper multiple times, I can assure you they back up the promise to contact all applicants. Absolutely first-class operation.
