The number you get when you add the two numbers together and subtract it from the original is always a number that is divisible by 9. The chart changes every time so every factor of nine--9, 18. 27, 36, etc. is the same symbol. And then it tells you that symbol was the one you saw.

And since you're staring at "your" symbol for the 10 seconds, you don't notice that all the factors of nine are the same symbol. Clever trick though.
