If a kid can't take getting sworn at, do you think maybe competitive athletics might not be for him?

What a bunch of bull****. My little league coaches used to swear all the time. I'm not saying it's right, but it didn't have an adverse affect on us. He was trying to pump his players up, and the school board and Grass totally overreacted. My guess is the player who had an issue with the coach's language had an ax to grind.

It's just another instance of the greater pussification of America.

None of us gave a **** about it, since we used it on them, too. Especially the cocksucker who coached our JV team.

And my Legion ball coach used just enough profanity for it to mean something when he did. Still sent a chill down my spine, when I went to cover his team about five years later.

When I read the story - and how the words were used - I backed off in a hurry.

I'm not against swearing ... I do plenty of it in real life. But the way in which the coach used the language was too borderline for me to say it was completely and utterly unfair. That is, saying the word - or just about any other word - in frustration is one thing. But combining it with fornicating with someone's mother is dumb.

Yeah. Which high school ballplayer -- I can only speak for baseball because that's all I played -- wasn't on the bench between innings, talking about sex or calling his teammates mother****ers.

I can't Imagine playing a baseball game without my coaches telling someone to get their ass on or off the field.

No, I think that's a valid point. But it's just the district, parents and the one players being a little oversensitive, in my opinion. Times have changed, and that sucks.

Nothing wrong with that point of view -- if there wasn't something wrong with it in some way, the guy wouldn't be fired.

My point wasn't that it was right for the guy to say. I just wouldn't have done more than rolled my eyes at the guy for saying it. If he wants to come off like a moron, like so many of my coaches did, he's welcome to do so.

No you are right, he didn't say he was going to f_ck their mothers, he asked if it would **** them off if he f_cked their mothers.

That's a little bit of hair splitting but it doesn't change the point -- if you are a role model, a teacher and you are dealing with high school kids -- why is the subject of f_cking mothers even creeping into your speeches in the first place? Are you that lacking in creativity? Are you that shallow?

Again, the kid who refused to go out on the field is a wuss and if I were his teammate I'd tell him he is no longer welcome on the team, but the "adult" in this situation needs to be smarter.

Right. If he said, "If you guys don't get pissed off, I'm going to **** all of your mothers tonight." Then, yeah, get his ass out of there. But I think the district was a bit extreme in this case.

I'm going to risk being called a ***** here, but here goes. If a teacher swore, people would call for his head. If the drama coach swore, people would call for his head. If the principal swore, people would call for his head. If the lunch lady swore, people would call for her head. In fact, the only position in a youth environment where swearing is acceptable is sports. If firing up your team with swearing is so great and effective, then why doesn't the English teacher get to say, "What is going to make you pissed off enough to write 500 words on 'Hamlet'? **** your mothers?" There are still way too many coaches who think yelling and swearing equals motivation. Again, if the math teacher taught that way, most anyone, rightly, would think he was a horrible teacher.

I know, having been a youth coach, that the issues are different because in many cases coaches come in with no training whatsoever, as opposed to full-time teachers. But that's not as much of an excuse at the high school level.
