I don't know if it was better material, but Jon Hamm did a hell of a job. He's got that Alec Baldwin thing down pat, a loveable smugness. Loved his James Mason, the John Ham, and his Don Draper bit.

The opening skit went after Biden and Murtha. That's why you guys think it sucked.

No, we think it sucked because it was completely devoid of anything remotely resembling humor.

I clocked that skit at around six minutes. It had enough material to stretch, at the most, 45 seconds.

Four minutes of going "Ha Ha! Look! I'm pointing to a guy in the crowd that you can't see! That's funny!" is not funny and the whole "let me clarify what I meant" thing was funny the first time. Not so much after 45,053 uses.

I saw the last hour of SNL last week (10/18), the first time I'd seen the show in years. It was stunningly unfunny. Even Weekend Update blew, and that's usually the easiest thing to do since you just need a couple of good lines to save it. The two anchors would deliver bad material, then sit there and smile until they got nervous laughter.

Poehler had her baby this afternoon, which set them scrambling to rewrite a bunch of stuff.

So she had the kid this afternoon. You mean to tell me she couldn't make it back to 30 Rock in time for tonight's show? At least for the opening skit and Weekend Update?

What's the old saying -- The Show Must Go On? Someone should tell that to Amy.

I imagine Jon Hamm will be headlining movies before too long. He's got skills.

So, I've got to ask. If you've got a gold skit on your hands, and you know it's the only thing people want to see, why open your show with something so painfully unfunny audience members like myself consider shutting the television off and watching shadow puppets?

I admit, I haven't watched much SNL over the past couple of years, but that opening sketch was one of the worst ones I've ever seen.

Funny thing is that the quotes were not far off from the actual quotes of Biden and Murtha

actually, I thought it was a good epsiode.The Biden/Murtha bit was good. Really good.
"By the beard of Jupiter, Gird Your Loins."
The next sketch wasn't that funny, but it really picked up steam from then on.
The Mad Men episode, Jon Hamm's John Ham was funny. So was Finger running for city council.
Don Draper's advice on picking up women. Even Weekend Update seemed to have more of an edge, plus Coldplay.
I got no complaints.

I know most actors are short, but I was surprised Hamm's listed height is only 5-11. They shoot him on Mad Men like he's 6-4.

The stuff with Hamm was uniformly good (save the sex offender sketch and the Vincent Price bit, both of which were about twice as long as they needed to be). They seemed to leave him out more than they usually do with the host, but maybe he was in a lot of stuff with Poehler. Coldplay was better than I thought they would be. Weekend Update batted its usual .100.

Bill Hader ups the funny quotient of anything he's in. He's the best on the show right now. Keenan Thompson is rarely funny but has a nice singing voice.

I thought there was too much Mad Men-related skits since it's a fairly lowly rated show on a network that has moves in the name. If you watch the show, I am sure it's funny. If you don't, most of the jokes just fell flat.

You should watch it, like Hamm said:
“It’s a cutthroat elimination dancing show. The show stars me, everyone from CSI, the Phillies and the Rays, we also makeover homes. …I don’t want to give anything away but John McCain and Barack Obama will be showing up and they’re both going to smoke weed. I can’t believe they agreed to do it… it’s pretty late in the episode so you have to watch the whole thing.”

That's what I thought. I watch "Mad Men," and I got the jokes in the two related skits, The Two A-Holes and the Being Don Draper one. They had some inside jokes for those who watch "Mad Men." The Vincent Price skit was the only one that was semi-funny outside of that, and it was because of the things Hamm said.

Not a very good episode at all. I agree that even Weekend Update blew chunks.

Dude, 90% of Weekend Update sucks every week. They hit on 1 or 2 jokes and the rest are cringe-worthy.

And if you haven't watched Mad Men, you have no business watching SNL or anything else. Get on that.

Jon Hamm's John Hamm was pretty decent, as was the sex offender bit. And I'm a Dem, but i thought the Murtha/Biden bit was pretty decent. They can't savage Palin EVERY week.
Not the best ep, but not terrible.
