So I'm watching public television and there's this documentary about noodlers, fishermen who wade into the water and catch catfish by hand. Pretty primal-looking stuff. These places looked pretty snaky to me, but these dudes weren't scared of anything, and they kept ducking under water and pulling labrador-sized fish out with their hands. Nucking futs, if you ask me, but then again, is this a great country or what?

And the award for the most random thread and post goes to .......... novelist_wannabe.

To answer your question, though, I often noodle in bars, just wander aimlessly with my eyes closed and hands outstretched. I'm not sure those were catfish that I was grabbing, however. Although, the labrador simile has often been very apt.

Corollary to an urban legend is the rural legend about a guy handfishing and having a snapping turtle bite off a couple of his fingers.

Oh, man, I'm going here with much trepidation, but ... there was one guy on the documentary talking about his dad getting his arm all chewed up by a beaver ...

Man, that must have been a deep beaver......I can only get 3-4 fingers in most beaver holes that I've encountered....

That happens.
It's just a crazy hobby.

I'll admit it. I've noodled.

But we called it "grabbin."

Good times.

Caught some big ass fish, too.

I had never heard of noodling until just now.

Any more than two and I'm wondering why I can get that many in there.

Crazy ****ers.

Could never do anything like that, Be my luck I would get a snake. But have to admit they are crazy fools, I like to watch the shows though, and think that most of them that do it must be on something.

Roy Oswalt is a noodler.

Honest to God. He was being interviewed on radio one day last spring, and talked all about it. It's one of his favorite pastimes.

We've written stories about it in our Outdoor section. The biggest local fish weighed more than 70 pounds!
