I get it. He brings in a lot of money, but he still sucks. ...

Selig provoked the 7 1/2 -month strike that wiped out the 1994 World Series, but since has presided over an era of labor peace unprecedented since the players' association was formed in the late 1960s. He pushed for interleague play and wild cards in the postseason, eliminated the structure of separate league offices, launched baseball's Internet business and international initiatives.

Up ahead in 2009 is the launch of MLB's television network. He predicted more change over the next five years.

"By the time I leave, you won't recognize the sport," he said.

That's music to a baseball fan's ears if I've ever heard it. ...

This week's sign that the apocalypse is upon us.

What a ****ing joke. The man and the news.

Since the owners are the ones voting, it's no surprise he was extended.

Vote was probably 30-0 (with the Brewers' voter — his daughter — NOT abstaining.)

I'd be surprised if Steinbrenner didn't vote against him. I'm pretty sure Steinbrenner and Selig are not fond of each other.

He may be a joke, HH, but F_B called it: all of this **** is clearly on the ****ing owners. They would rather have status quo and no changes to be made, than to sit and have to deal with a new sheriff.

The days of an independent commissioner are long gone and will be for another three years.

I always laugh when people place irrational blame on the players for the strike, or for their outrageous salaries, etc. The truth is, the owners are too stupid to save baseball from themselves.

Ain't just baseball, my man. It's every team sport. Owners want salary caps so they are protected from their own fiscal stupidity.

I don't think he'd be the second coming of Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

THAT's what baseball needs. At least the he's the law part of it.

I was cracking up at the subject line of the announcement email from MLB: "Commissioner Selig's Contract Extended Through 1012"

I mean, I know the guy's old and all ...

That's funny. I thought the two of them were golfing buddies.

The days of an independent commissioner never happened. From the very start, Landis was a stooge for the owners (notably Charlie Comiskey).

Only way Landis was a stooge for Comiskey was in their mutual hatred for Ban Johnson.

Landis was the man who destroyed Comiskey's team when he didn't have to.

That said, your first point is correct. There's never been an independent commish -- not even Fay Vincent, though he's trying hard to create that legacy now.

Any owner who didn't vote for Selig's extension is crazy. All Bud has done is keep the cash flowing like Niagara Falls while sustaining all of the ridicule from the public and media. What more could they want? Someone with a conscience and a hammer? No way.
