The Patriot News wunderkind tackles hazing at Penn State.

Asya Trowell could stomach eating an entire jar of mayonnaise.
She expected hot sauce thrown on her face and in her eyes.
The wet towel snapping against her face so hard that it ripped — that, Trowell thought, was a little too far.
"OK. I guess so," she remembers thinking.
But the next night, she and two other pledges were brought to a field behind a State College church and beaten for more than three hours by two older students who kicked her in the head, punched her until she bled, and stomped on her face and back, she later told police according to a police report obtained by The Patriot-News.
The beatings were so brutal, she said, the attackers had to take breaks because they exhausted themselves.
The 18-year-old from Owings Mills, Md., went into survival mode. She went numb and shut down. She said she took each blow, and stood there as the women wiped their bloody hands on her shirt.
If she survived, she thought, she was not ever going back to the so-called friends she thought she had within the fraternity Omega Psi Phi and its little sister group for women, Omega Essence.
The next day, she said as members tried to explain to Trowell that her beating was "normal," and no worse than what everyone else endured, Trowell attended her last classes at Penn State. She packed up and went home to Maryland without finishing her first year as a college student.

A research assistant. Potential crimes happening on campus.

There's a problem at Penn State, and it doesn't look like it's restricted to the Football Program:

The man driving never looked Trowell in the eye, but she knew him well. He was her mentor and friend, and his involvement with Omega Psi Phi had led to her interest in the group.

She later found that just three weeks before her alleged attack, police had opened a separate hazing investigation involving the same man.

The man, whose name is being withheld along with the others because no charges have been filed, is a grad student and research assistant at Penn State and works as part of a dorm program that encourages academics and diversity.

During spring break, the man and several others went into Pennypacker Hall — the dorms were closed for the holiday. When police arrived, officers could hear slapping sounds, according to a police report. When officers walked inside, several paddles were found in a bag that had been hidden from view.

Has anyone noticed the "Penn State Online" ads on this site?

They should add the tagline, "You can't be raped or hazed if you attend online."

The only group of people in America more obsessed than SportsJournalists.com with when Ganim is going to leave the Patriot-News for a bigger pond make up the Penn State administration.

The second most feared words on that campus are: Sara Ganim wants you to call her back as soon as possible.

The first are: Coach Sandusky wants to see you in private.

You have a 9 a.m. with Sandusky and a 9:30 with Ganim would terrify me more.

Does she have an agent or book deal?

Couldn't she just sign on with The New York Times now? I'm sure it would be fine with The Times for her to cover Penn State for it.

The Times coverage has been excellent.

And, I believe their main reporter on the story is an alum of the Patriot-News.

The Penn State officials were too busy to meet... Jesus H Tap-Dancin' Christ. Setting themselves up for another big heap of trouble.

You go, Sara. This ought to be good. :)

Good on Sara.

Simply amazing to me that this kind of crap still goes on.

Penn State is who really needs to hire Sara Ganim. Pay her a football coach's salary. She's slaying them. SportsJournalists.com beatification awaits!

While hazing incidents have largely dropped among the white fraternities and sororities, it has gotten amazingly worse for the black Greek organizations. The hazing is largely done by the groups' alumni who can do whatever they damn well please.

Hazing is also horrible for the band fraternity and sorority.

So if anyone doesn't think this is still a problem, you'd be wrong.

Just curious -- have alumni who have been involved in hazing given reasons for doing so?

Great reporting, but as for the woman subject of the clip above...she hangs out with guys who brand each other and she's surprised when she's beaten? WTF?

When I was a pledge, we were hazed, but NOTHING like this. The line was always "We're not asking you to do anything we didn't have to do." But again, it was nothing like this. Looking back, some of the drinking involved was pretty excessive, but everything else was pretty tame by today's standards.

There's some crazy **** going on now.

I believe you are mistaken regarding the racial differences.

I could be wrong. Do you have a source?

And I agree, I lived in a place very much like Animal House and there was no physical violence. Ever.

Not that it was pretty, but no violence.

Who had 16 as the over-under until someone blamed the victim?

I don't think that's exactly what TV is saying, but when I saw, especially in the 1990s it seemed, with these NBA players and all their hot wire scars, I thought those guys were really upping the game when it came to fraternities and what was going on behind closed doors.
