So, this got threadjacked, so before I chime in, all the best to Mr. Forman, who I’m sure at one time thought doing his job for four decades would elicit some appreciation from management.
In my layoff six years ago, from a place I worked for 16 years, I got the news at a Starbucks. Editor asked me to come in to the office to talk on a Monday (which was my customary day off, so that was a dead giveaway right there) and then when I was getting ready to leave home, she called again and asked me to meet at the Starbucks nearest the newsroom, so I met her there and got the news. I appreciated getting told in person, though, and this was a Lee Enterprises paper at the time, and it was definitely a corporate decision. My editor obviously wasn't happy to let me go, and I told her I had no animosity toward "anybody in the building" (my roundabout way of saying "**** Lee, not you guys").
Oh yeah, and this all happened after I missed three weeks with back surgery and the subsequent rehab, but that's a story for another time.

Friend of mine just lost their job a couple of weeks ago. When they asked the reason for the termination, they said, "We're an at-will employment state and don't have to disclose that."

"Yeah, well, we're adults here. So how 'bout you just answer the ****in' question."

I have a friend who was fired years ago when her newsroom announced that it was firing X amount of people but everyone had to meet with management regardless to find out if they were getting fired or if they had things to improve on. These meetings were spread out over the course of two days, and management just grabbed folks when they wanted to talk so it wasn't like there was a schedule and you could just come into the newsroom when you wanted. Some people got fired at the beginning of the first day, some got fired in the middle of the process, my friend had to wait it out before losing her job near the end of the second day.

I've been fired by email. That was a ****ty way to start the day.

The email is terrible but sometimes I think it's better than the horror stories I've heard of people being called in to listen to scripted bull**** from an uncaring superior who won't answer questions, apologize, sympathize or anything else. Email is cold but it definitely is "rip off the band-aid with some skin" and you're done.


Our daughter in summer 2023 was flown to San Francisco to present at the Big Company Conference. She did a great job. She was on the plane on the tarmac, early Friday morning to fly back to NYC, and pulling away from the gate when the email hit about company cuts.

We quickly said "Terrible, sorry, ugh" all the things as she was rolling to the runway. I sent a text that said "by the time you land, have a plan and go with it." She's pretty pragmatic and didn't fall apart about it. Fortunately she got six months severance, insurance and a bonus due from the previous year, so she had a hell of a nice summer chilling out, traveling and job hunting. Found a new one, pays more, better benefits, all the things.

Huh. Imagine that, a sports/outdoors reporter being an important job at a place where sports and outdoors are important to a lot of readers.

If I begin my day with an email firing me, I’m heading to the golf course. I had a guy work me all day Friday then let me go at the end of the day. Bro, you knew that you were firing me when you left the house. Just get it over with and give that person their time back.
