Talk about a home run ...
I covered a Little League B-tournament game — yes, yes, the pinacle to any career — and Local Team A is beating Local Team B 7-2 in the bottom of the 6th inning. Local Team B rallies to 7-5 and then puts runners on 1st and 2nd base with 2 outs. The team's biggest kid comes to the plate. I'm thinking 3-run home run, what a comeback!
Well, if by home run you mean single and 3-base error ... So the kid drills a liner into right field. The right field bends down and watches the ball roll between his legs to the fence. The runner at 2nd base scores easily, 7-6. The runner at 1st base trips over 2nd base and the batter, racing like the wind, steps on 2nd base and nearly runs past his teammate. But the kid gets up just in time and rounds 3rd and scores, 7-7. The batter keeps chugging as the defense fumbles and flobbles the ball. Batter slides into home without incident for a winning 3-run home run single/3-base error. Local Team B wins 8-7.
Easily more exciting than anything the MLB Derby will produce. And yes, it was the tournament's B Division. Hey, if the sports editor isn't willing to do it, how can he expect any future underlings to?
