I disagree, Zag. If we assume everything else in the sport stayed the same but there was no BCS, then TCU would be not just an undefeated team, but part of what has been the biggest, or at least loudest, story of 2010, the status of the smaller conference power teams. It would be a matchup the country would be most eager to see, and, if the bowls still had individual deals with different networks, one it would be hard to justify turning down to one's broadcast partner.

I don't see any games with Utah, Boise, or TCU on this list of the highest rated BCS games. I do see a *lot* of Ohio State.

To be fair, the top three Ohio State involved games were national title games. Under the old system, Auburn-TCU would either be for a split national title or outright depending on Oregon's outcome, so I'd imagine it would be the most-sought after match-up.

The Rose Bowl is always the highest rated bowl game outside of the National Championship Game every year, and will be again this year, whether it was TCU-Wisconsin or Stanford-Wisconsin or TCU-Michigan State, etc.

Under the old, old system, yes TCU would go to the Cotton Bowl as SWC champ. They might also be relegated to a lesser bowl as a perfect Arizona State team was in 1975 and more recently in 1998 when 10-2 Kansas State finished third in the BCS but got no BCS Bowl bid and a 12-0 Tulane team also settled for the Liberty Bowl.

I'm happy as hell to be headed with wife and others to the Gator Bowl and to be facing a tradition-rich program like Michigan.
That said, there are way too many bowls.
The NCAA should have the gumption to require 7 wins in order to make a bowl, including 6 against D-I schools.
Six wins just shouldn't cut it.
With 7, the bowls would be forced to invite teams that moreso deserve a trip.
We need a playoff and there is no good argument against one. Not with every other division and every other sport having one.
The only reason we don't is because the bowl organizers have too much power and they have for years been married to the NCAA execs.

The Rose Bowl should be interesting to see how TCU stacks up to a quality opponent on the big stage. The Fiesta Bowl should be nothing short of a massacre, but you can never be sure, since Oklahoma is historically pretty bad in BCS bowl games (only 2-5). The Orange Bowl will be notable for Stanford since it's their first time in a major bowl game in quite some time, and Virginia Tech will be looking for that elusive major bowl win. Other than that, this is probably the least intriguing bowl game for me. Ohio State is going to be looking for a second consecutive BCS bowl win, and also looking to finally beat an SEC team in a bowl game (which they have never done). Arkansas is hoping to keep their momentum up and hoping this will being them back to consistent national prominence. And as for the national championship game, I am going to be hoping for Oregon to blow out Auburn, because **** the SEC. But it still should be an interesting game.

Other noteworthy bowl games (in my opinion):

that's 1/2 Soo ****ing Close Bowl, obviously for Boise.
Utah got their dicks kicked in the dirt by TCU and followed with a loss
to Notre Dame. also were unimpressive over Pitt and San Diego St.

Notre Dame appeared on two ballots. Allen Pinkett had the Irish at No. 25. Don Criqui had them at No. 16. (16?!?)

Oh yeah, Criqui is the radio play-by-play voice of Notre Dame. His color man is Pinkett.

Interesting take from Wetzel, but if there is a 16-team playoff, I want to see the best 16 teams (or close to it, since I know no format is perfect). I do not want to see a 6-6 teams in that mix.

Dear Blitz: The following are my Gator Bowl travel tips.
1. Rent a car. You need it.
2. Head said car to the beaches ASAP. That's where the good restaurants, bars, etc. are.
3. Avoid downtown until the game, unless you are going to attend one of the big fan rallies they have.
I'll be down in Ponte Vedra Beach December 26-January 2 myself, so feel free to PM me with questions, etc.

The bowls aren't about tradition. If they were they would have kept the bowls at 10 or so, the Big Four (and I'm talking Cotton, not the Fiesta), the Sun, the Gator, the Liberty, the Peach and the Tangerine (Citrus). Throw in the Holiday, maybe the All-American (Outback) and the Vegas Bowl.
It's about making money. So since it's about making money, make more of it with a playoff.
