Running Bowl Selection Thread

It's amazing how obsessed some of the fans are with their team getting picked by the game that has first priority for selection.

Last year, Missouri fans were upset that they didn't get to go to the INSIGHT BOWL! This year, taking a quick glance at their message boards, Mizzou fans are upset about likely going to the Holiday Bowl instead of the Cotton or Alamo Bowl. Wow, you really got shafted, you get to go play a 7-5 team in San Diego as opposed to a 6-6 team in San Antonio! Spending the holidays in San Diego, what a terrible, terrible fate.

South Carolina has to go to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl instead of the Outback Bowl? What a crime against humanity! Instead of playing a 7-5 Penn State team (Is their best win Temple, Michigan, or Northwestern?), they play a 9-4 Florida State team in Atlanta.

UConn going to one of these games is a joke and is example 1A of why the system needs to be blown up.

UConn won its conference. Whaddya gonna do?

Seriously, where was all the bitching and crying in 1999 when ****ty Stanford won the PAC-10 and has its ass handed to them by Wisconsin. Or the following year when a ****ty 8-3 Purdue made the Rose Bowl and was hammered by Washington. Or even better yet, how about 5 loss FSU in 2005 making the Orange Bowl. Ohh wait, none of those were Big East teams so who cares. No wonder people believe there's a midwestern and southern bias in college football. It's because there is.

Seriously, where was all the bitching and crying in 1999 when ****ty Stanford won the PAC-10 and has its ass handed to them by Wisconsin. Or the following year when a ****ty 8-3 Purdue made the Rose Bowl and was hammered by Washington. Or even better yet, how about 5 loss FSU in 2005 making the Orange Bowl. Ohh wait, none of those were Big East teams so who cares. No wonder people believe there's a midwestern and southern bias in college football. It's because there is.

The problem for the Big East is they NEVER have a good team anymore. In the three years since WVU's Fiesta Bowl, what is the conference's greatest non-conference win -- Cincinnati winning at Oregon State last year? Big whoop. Those other conferences may have down years. The Big East in the BCS is just an anachronism from when Miami, BC and Va Tech were there.

BTW Stanford didn't get its ass handed to it, unless losing 17-9 -- and trailing 10-9 until the final TD with seven minutes left -- is getting its ass handed to it. Quite a bit different from, say, I don't know, an undefeated team wailing about getting left out of the championship game and then losing 51-24 to a conference runner-up in the Sugar Bowl.

What is the Big Ten's best win this year? Ohio State beating Miami, a team that was so good they fired their coach.

And I'd say the coaching situation last year at Cincy had just a little bit to do with why they performed so poorly in that game against Florida.

The Big East is awful this year, but anybody who thinks it is that much worse than the ACC is delusional.

Earlier this season, the Tennessee AD gave a fat check to UNC to avoid playing them next year.

Now, of course, the Vols will play UNC in Nashville in some random lower tiered bowl.

Just for kicks, here's what the bowl lineup might have been under the old system

Rose: Oregon vs. Wisconsin (if the Big Ten tie is broken by highest-ranked team).
Orange: Oklahoma vs. Virginia Tech
Fiesta: Ohio State vs. Nebraska???
Sugar: Auburn vs. TCU???

Actually, under the true old system it would have probably looked like this:

Rose (Big 10 vs. Pac 10): Oregon vs. Michigan State (old Big 10 tiebreaker was "which team has the longest Rose Bowl drought")
Orange (Big 8 vs. at-large): Oklahoma vs. Virginia Tech
Cotton (SWC vs. at-large): TCU vs. Nebraska
Sugar (SEC vs. at-large): Auburn vs. Texas A&M
Fiesta (at-large vs. at-large): Stanford vs. Wisconsin

There aren't a lot of glamorous OOC wins for any teams this year.

Boise over #11 VaTech
Arkansas over #17 Texas A&M
LSU over #21 WVU
Oklahoma over #23 Florida State

These are the only OOC wins versus ranked teams that I can think of.

I would say that seeing as the seventh place team in the Big East, Cincy, nearly upset the Big 12 champion before losing by, what was it two points, and that WVU lost by six points to LSU, well, they can compete.

Seeing as how UConn didn't score an offensive TD last night against South Florida, I would say yes I think Michigan would beat them. Or at least it would be a good game. And remember what we're talking about: whether a BCS automatic qualifier could beat a Big Ten second-division team.

You're moving this whole argument very far from what it was, but basically this is another year that shows the Big East simply does not deserve AQ status. When it has a team that reaches high enough up in the rankings, like Cincinnati last year, there's a provision for that. But as things stand the Big East is the poser just about every year, with this year's UConn team joining the 2004 Pitt group that had three losses and then got embarrassed by Utah.
