Well, to be fair, we do have a thread about a guy who just died, who owned a ****ing slave, and people are talking about the great article he wrote, and not dancing on his grave, or damning him to hell.

Then say something nice about him, celebrate him.

What's hypocritical is when pieces of **** human beings die their transgressions are suddenly forgotten or glossed over. I just went to a funeral for a friends Dad, a Dad who beat the **** out of him and his Mom. It made my stomach turn to sit there and listen to all the cute funny stories and tales of what a good man he was. **** that, if you're a scumbag alive you are a scumbag dead.

Thankfully I have enough going on in my life -- good, bad and otherwise -- that I am indifferent. Ailes is not worth expending any significant energy over. Much more concerned about Cornell's demise.

It's a fair question. When I was asked he could tell I did not want to go, I then got a call from his wife telling me how much he really wanted me and a couple others there. I did it for him not his Father.

Boy, this thread is just like the one when Teddy Kennedy died. Everyone's focused on his moral failings, and history of sexual harassment, and not the incredible career he had.

I hope Bill Clinton lives forever. I'd hate to see what his RIP thread would look like. Everyone focused on his sexual misdeeds instead of his historic presidency, and all the charitable work he did post-presidency.

I had a similar experience a few years back. The guy was my little league coach and his son was my best friend back then. Coach was a womanizer, a successful insurance salesman with a golden tongue. He and the wife produced five kids, then he divorced her and started up with Playboy-quality women. His funeral was held in a church he didn't attend and officiated by a reverend he had never met. You can easily tell when the eulogy is nearly word-for-word what the family had written in the handout. I was sitting next to the father of another friend. During the eulogy, the reverend said that coach "was a homebody, he loved being at home." My friend's dad leaned over to me and whispered, "Yeah, but who's home?" It was all I could do to keep from busting out laughing during eulogy.

I once took a homiletics (speech giving) class where we did few sessions on funerals. The general rule is highlight the positive, round up but don't say anything that will ring false with those who knew the deceased better than you. The teacher brought in en example of two eulogies he had given. One for a prominent jerk (name blacked out), one for a woman who killed her child and herself. Good class.

What's my issue?

I haven't come here to praise him. Haven't defended him against criticism either.

Contrast with something like the Kennedy thread, where no criticism was accepted, and the thread ended up getting locked.

It's liberals who have a hard time accepting that their heroes are/were flawed individuals.

From George Washington on, I have no problem dealing with the fact that these guys may have done good works, and been admirable in many ways, while also having flaws that are unacceptable to me in other ways.
