As usual, you guys need to quit hating on bruthas. Will admit the question could have been asked with better tact or at the worst was wrongly worded. But should Parker be fired? Hell no. Should he be discipline? Not even. Especially in a town where one of your columnist buddies just flat out made up some **** and got to keep his column. Let's move on!

BTW,

Someone suggested the coach should have come off the podium and punched Rob. That don't really work with black people. That's some **** he might have been able to get off on one of ya'll.
Yo, fo real. RPark woulda just capped the mofo that jumped in his face. A brutha wit a job in MotorCity is about as common as a Rabbi in a NBA locker Room.

Guys, come on...

Somebody just had to bring race into this. Un****ingbelievable. I couldn't care less about the color of Rob Parker's skin. What he did was wrong and brings disgrace to our profession. It would have served him right if Marinelli had cleaned his clock.

I've known Rob a long time and know his sense of humor and sense of self-importance. Both were on display here. But I don't think Rob would be inclined or even know how to "cap" anything ... except maybe a soda or beer bottle.

Marinelli would have been justified in jumping out from behind the podium and punching out that moron.

Parker's question was out of line, and THAT would not be? Dude...

I've known Rob a long time, also. I confess, first, to not seeing the interview and secondly to not having read his Monday column. But this sounds like Rob's idea of a sense of humor. Was it intentional? It certainly sounds like something Rob would get in his head and believe that it would make a "cute" way to broach the subject. So, yes, it almost certainly was intentional.
We've all said things that sound a lot different to us when they come out of our mouths than they did when they were only thoughts.
Rob needs to find a way to convince Marinelli this was an idea not well thought out, that went bad and was wrong, wrong, wrong. He needs to convince Marinelli that he knows it was a mistake.
But I do not believe Rob Parker has a mean nor a racist bone in his body.

But he's there to cover a story not make himself part of the story, right?

Afraid that ship has sailed, Tarheel. Now, he's got to address what he did.

I'm sure the mods are going to combine this with the on going thread about Rob. It's a sad situation. I've known Rob for more than 20 years. I consider him a dear friend. He made a mistake and he's paying for it. As a friend, I will stick by him. He's a good guy.

You want to use your column to toy around with the son-in-law stuff, that's one thing.

But you want to do your work in real time, poking a coach with a sharp stick while he's at a podium for the benefit of other reporters in the room, you're acting like an ass, some morning shock-jock type. This isn't performance art where "columnist provoking coach" carries some great meaning or reveals a new truth.

It doesn't make a difference that Rob Parker is an African American. The point is that he made a crude joke.
There is no cause to mock African Americans or any other race on these threads. Grow up. There's nothing funny about it.

Question: Had he just cracked a joke in the column about how Marinelli probably wishes his daughter had married a more talented D-coordinator, would this have still been a big deal?

Probably, because he would have looked gutless and stupid for the shot at his daughter, instead of just stupid.
