Al Roker did a live shot from Willard’s place on one of his recent birthdays. He did not look or sound good. I would’ve thought he was older… he started in radio in D.C. in the ’50s.

When I was sports editor at the college paper, our baseball writer failed to file after a night game. It had rained earlier that day and he assumed the game would be postponed. A good lesson in never assuming. I nicknamed him "Willard" and it stuck like glue.

Like @UPChip , I always hoped (and, honestly, kind of expected) him to reach 100 before he kicked off this mortal coil. My Nana loved the man, and I like to think she’ll get the chance to meet him now.

I've honestly never understood TV weather - I get that its a highly rated segment, but I always figured if TV stations really wanted to cash in they would run ads during during the weathercast (split screen or with a crawl) and bank the ridiculous salaries they pay their weather people. Scott seemed like a decent enough guy who never took himself seriously - and he was great on The Hogan Family with Edie McClurg.

I was only around for a couple years of Vance and never really watched the local news then, but from everything I heard he was a classic badass.
