Bulger got away with his crimes for so long because FBI guys in Boston covered for him because he was ratting out Italian mob guys. Not too much of a stretch to see their descendants take vengeance. But it could've just been a spur of the moment prison thing as well. Lots of people with poor impulse control in max security Federal prisons.Since the witness protection program was created decades ago, the mob has had an incredibly poor track record against retaliating against snitches and former snitches.
I know Bulger wasn't technically La Cosa Nostra but you'd think they'd keep better watch on the guy. Or at least better track who he might be bumping into in the lunch line. Was he in general population?

It's like a throwback to the 1970s. Jerry Capeci, the former New York Daily News reporter, writes a weekly web-column on the ins and outs of the mob. It's a really interesting read, if you're into that sort of thing.

There are plenty of mob hits, but they are multi-ethnic now relating to the drug trade. And even there that has sorted itself out into monopolies or reasonably shared markets in big cities. Frankly, the old Irish and Italian mobs are dying off of natural causes more than anything else. Here's his site ... America's Expert on Organized Crime | Gangland News
After that hit, I got on Google Maps to see if I could find Zottola's "family compound." Sure enough, it was marked as the location of his business. You could zoom in, do street view, the works. In the day where anybody with an Internet connection can find where people live, I don't know how there aren't more mob hits now. (Other than the obvious reason of not wanting to draw the Feds' attention.)
