Simply the best. Don't ever remember him writing a column that wasn't worth reading.

As the obituary indicated when describing how he helped bring Shula to the Dolphins, his role in making South Florida a major-league sports market cannot be underestimated.

Wasn't Eddie also the first guy to write about Namath guaranteeing the Jets would beat the Colts in Supe III?
I was a few seats down from him in a press box for an FSU-Miami game back in the early 90s when that game meant something. He got a phone call from someone on the desk apparently trying to hurry him along. He barked back, "You want it quick or you want it good?"
I have the notion that he usually did both.

The story I remember most about Pope is that he wrote a negative comment about Howard Cosell (use blowhard since I can't remember exactly what it was.)

Cosell comes up to him and says, "Why did you write that I was a blowhard?"

Pope said, "Because you are." Cosell got a kick out of that and laughed.
