Horrible. The business lost a great one.

R.I.P, Steve.

And I echo Jersey_Guy: Save your love for someone that will love you back, ladies and gents. Don't let the paper be your life.

Also will be a journalism scholarship at FSU in his name. Bowden will speak at a memorial service Tuesday.

Class move by FSU to start a scholarship in his name.

Bowden will probably think he is eulogizing Bill McGrotha.

Given the circumstances, that last comment was pretty low class.

How many other college coaches would do that for a writer?

Very classy move.

You mean Nick Saban wouldn't do that for Paul Finebaum?

Nah, pretty sure Bowden would do it because he's a class act human being first and foremost...before anybody would ever even accuse him of being a college football coach.

Steve would deserve this. Thanks coach.

These are two first-class humans.
Only a few weeks ago, Steve Ellis wrote that Bobby Bowden should step aside. I can't argue with that logic. Steve did not write that lightly. It was not a knee-jerk column. It was written, I imagine, only after considerable reflection based on 28 years of knowledge.
Having said that, I still can't think of many coaches who would speak at the memorial service of a reporter who had only recently advocated said coach's dismissal.
I believe recent events speak well to all parties. And I still can't believe that there will be FSU football with neither Bobby Bowden nor Steve Ellis in the picture.

All the accolades written here about Steve Ellis are spot on. One of the best in the business. I was just starting out in the biz and one of our local players got in trouble and was kicked off the Florida State team. We needed a comment from Bobby Bowden and it was late. We called Ellis to see if he could help us out. Ten minutes later, Bowden called US, we didn't call him. Steve didn't have to do that, but that's the kind of guy he was. Damn, he will be missed.

That says a lot about the kind of guy Bowden is, too.
