In 1996, British music monthly Mojo named him the second-greatest guitarist of all time, behind Jimi Hendrix. The publication said, “Cropper puts everything he’s got, which is considerable, at the disposal of the artist and the song: metronome-crisp timing; deadly-accurate chops; earth-moving bottom-line riffs; sharp, nasty little licks and grace notes. His solos never outstay their welcome or leave you wanting less.”

If you haven’t seen it, the documentary on Stax that is on HBO Max is tremendous. The way Booker T and the MGs formed is almost beyond belief. (Stax needed a band on short notice. Booker T was a high school kid in the studio’s neighborhood. Steve Cropper worked in the record store attached to the studio.)

I think this video was posted on Donald Dunn's RIP thread a few years ago. I love this one because I know Dunn and Cropper mainly from the Blues Brothers, and I'm just fascinated seeing those two clean-shaven and with shorter hair.

Blue Lou Marini, Murphy Dunne and Tom Bones Malone are still kicking. As is Paul Schaffer, who was supposed to be in the movie but had to drop out because he was committed to a project with Gilda Radner.

Drummers Willie Too Big Hall and Steve Jordan are alive as well.

Cropper, Duck Dunn, Matt Guitar Murphy and Mr. Fabulous are gone.

That video is a blast. They were so young.

We threw many great parties in college, particularly senior year when we lived a couple of miles off campus in what amounted to a big electric shack. Could play music as loud as we wanted. And we did.

Our crew would chip in to fully stock the bar and buy the first keg. We charged $5 at the door.

When we ran dry and it was time to collect for the second keg, we pulled out the hat and weaved our way through the well-lubricated crowd.

The keg collection song was always “Green Onions” and I swear it just made people happy and throw a few extra bucks in the hat.
