The age of editorial cartooning is gone now, but in its day when Steve Benson was a household name in Arizona, it was probably our most powerful form of expression.
For years, the political cartoons of Steve Benson exploded from the pages of The Arizona Republic and in syndication in hundreds of other publications across the nation and world.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of his career is the political transition he went through over years from bomb-throwing right-winger to Molotov-slinging left-winger.
The practical result was that the Arizonans who loved him early in his career hated him at the end. While those who first hated him later loved him.
It was as if the whole state was changing sides on Benson.
Benson came of age when political cartooning was hitting its stride with some of the greatest in the craft — Paul Conrad at the Los Angeles Times, Jeff MacNelly at the Chicago Tribune, Mike Luckovich at the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Steve Benson knew these people well and was every bit their peer. After years of being nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, journalism's highest honor, he won in 1993.
