Son of a big-leaguer, won the Little League World Series twice (once on a forfeit after the fact) while throwing two no-hitters, went on Letterman, top-10 MLB draft pick, won an Olympic gold medal, had more than 500 games in The Show, and in between was an addict taking discarded cheeseburgers out of Vegas trash cans. Dropped dead coaching his son's Little League team.

Sean Burroughs, Padres' first-round pick in 1998, dies at 43

Terrible news. Obviously first heard about him during the Little League days, but he was a highly regarded prospect in San Diego who, for whatever reason, didn't really pan out. I did not know about the subtance issues, but from the Athletic story, it seems like he turned a corner on that. RIP.

I put this in the MLB thread when it was posted earlier this morning:

Holy crap. I covered those Long Beach teams when they came through San Bernardino for the regionals (last stop before Williamsport). Brought in massive crowds for all of their games, including the two championship games in 1992 and 1993. They were rock stars in 1993 and the title game, people were securing seats and setting up chairs at 8 a.m. for a 7 p.m. game. And after their first game in 1993, I got the inside information that Taiwan was going to be banned from the LLWS before Williamsport announced it and I had a quote from their manager, Larry Lewis, for the paper the next day before everyone else had it.

Burroughs obviously was the star of those teams, for his pitching and his hitting. Everyone stood up every time he came up to bat and he almost always delivered and sent moon shots out of the stadium with regularity.

Obituary: Sean Burroughs’ Sudden Passing Shocks Long Beach Baseball World – The562.org

I am at that Stearns Park a couple times a week because my grandsons play baseball there. In fact, if my 7 year old grandson had won their game last monday, they would have been playing Burrough's son's team on the day he passed. Burroughs went back to his truck in the parking lot, I believe during his son's game. He didn't come back, and I believe Jeff Burroughs went to find his son, and found him unresponsive. Paramedics were called. Although they put up a protective fence around, my understanding is that it was terrible as all the 7 year olds had to walk by after their game ended.
