The Newhouses's have a reputation as a family that will not sell. His brother was born in 1929. I wonder if that will change with his death and the problems the newspaper industry is confronting.

It was a great brand. Set me up nicely in my earlier years. When they began to pivot to digital, though, they forgot about the print people.

I’m from New York, and follow business news. I know who he was.

Do I think most of the journalists here, covering Friday night football games in Podunk knew who he was? Unless they worked for one of his properties, no, probably not — as evidenced by the lack of posts on this thread.

Give him credit for the commitment to quality publications and giving a venue for top-shelf writers to do top-shelf work. The economics have changed, but Conde Nast still has a great stable - just not as great as it used to be. They aren't alone.

It's a good bet most of the journalists here, even those covering football on Fridays (for whom you have so much disdain) instead of Sundays, have heard of the man whether they worked for one of his properties or not.

The majority of their grads go into broadcast, not print.

Honestly, I’m not trying to be disdainful. No one posted here. The guy, his family, and their company, were giants in the industry.

So, why is it not of interest to most folks here? Because most folks here do work in Podunk, didn’t go to Missouri, Ohio, Syracuse, or Columbia, don’t aspire to work for a major metro, and never heard of him.

And I've worked with plenty of Syracuse grads in print. All of them were talented and well-schooled.
