Majerus had one of the best titles for an autobiography, "My Life On a Napkin."

Three-plus hours since this was posted and not a news story of it anywhere other than first mention that it's breaking on Twitter?

Where do you get three hours?

I think the clock on this site is screwed up. I believe it's set to Pacific time.

Weird. Time for every post is correct on my end.

First post on this thread reads 5:17 p.m. I posted at 8:30 p.m. - Eastern time. By my math, that would have been three hours.

Heart-felt sentiments, Bubbler. What Dooley and others said.

RIP, coach.

Bernie Miklasz:

Majerus was there for Keith Van Horn, his brightest star at Utah. The coach received a late-night call in 1993. It was Van Horn’s mother. She had shocking news: Keith’s father was dead. A sudden heart attack took his life. And Van Horn’s mom didn’t know how to tell her son. She asked Coach Majerus to do it.

Majerus, of course, was there. At 2 a.m., he took Van Horn to a diner. They sat down. The coach told the freshman the worst words imaginable: Your father has died. Van Horn broke down in tears. Majerus consoled him. They sat there all night, telling happy stories about their late fathers, eating breakfast, and handling the pain. They cried together. They shared bagels. They hugged. They talked some more.

When Van Horn finally walked into the morning light of Salt Lake City, he was ready to face the tragedy. Van Horn said he entered that diner as a kid, and by the time he left, he’d become a man. Majerus pulled him through.

I remember that story on Van Horn, and something about how the NCAA did their usual BS and said Majerus commited a violation for buying Van Horn a sandwich at the airport. And Majerus basically told the NCAA where they could go.

Great tribute Bubs, and those Majerus quotes were awesome. RIP to an excellent coach, and, from what it sounds like, an even better man.

If you go back and check the time stamp on your original post, I bet you'll see that it says 5:30 - KYSW is correct in that the clock defaults to Pacific Time. You have to go into your Account Settings and override it manually.

Hoo, boy. Dave Jones in Harrisburg writes a blog post that's going to earn him lots of hate mail.

The columnist as food police. Not cool.

When Mantle died, were there a lot of columns saying "He shouldn't have been a drunk!!!"

When a smoker dies of lung cancer, do we immediately say, "He shouldn't have been a smoker!!!!"

Overweight people are still the main ones people can look at and say, "Tsk, tsk."

Dave Jones in Harrisburg is apparently desperate to get his paper some attention, following the departure of Sara Ganim, its only national name.

According to a linked Miklasz column, Majerus' father, grandmother and several uncles all died prematurely from heart failure. So sounds like genetics might be equally or more to blame as gluttony.

Perhaps David Jones should've at least acknowledged that fact alongside the finger pointing.

Of all the chicken**** things the NCAA has issued sanctions for, going after Utah and Majerus was the worst. RIP.

Good, and objective, read on Majerus by SI's Seth Davis:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/seth_davis/12/02/rick-majerus/index.html?eref=sihp&sct=hp_t13_a0

It's not quite as good as Bubbler's writeup, though.

Dale Hofmann, one of the best sports writers and columnists to not go national, covered Marquette in those McGuire, Raymonds, Majerus years. He's been retired for seven-plus years but checked in with a strong Majerus tribute.
