Record loses leader

A.J. Dickman

The Roswell Daily Record has lost its leader.

Publisher Robert Cory Beck died from a sudden illness early Sunday morning. He was 53.

Beck became publisher of the Record on Nov. 5, 1987, when his father and former publisher Robert H. Beck stepped down.

Cory Beck was educated in Roswell and Southboro, Mass. He attended New Mexico Military Institute and received a bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University at Flagstaff, Ariz. He also did graduate work at Bucknell University.

As a young man, Cory Beck worked at the Daily Record and the Albuquerque Journal during the summer. He also worked at the El Paso Times for three years and with the Sunbury Daily Item in Lewisburg, Pa., for three and a half years.

Record editor Andrew Poertner, said Beck was dedicated to his newspaper and its employees.

“Cory’s death has come as a tremendous shock to the Daily Record,” Poertner said. “He was passionate about always improving the quality of the paper and worked tirelessly to offer support and guidance to those who worked for him. He will be sorely missed and the entire staff at the paper offer their sincerest condolences to his family and friends.”
