RIP to Dave "Boo" Ferriss, who won 20-plus games in his first two seasons for the Boston Red Sox (1945-46), then hurt his arm and was out of baseball by 1950:



He later coached at Delta State for nearly 30 years, winning 639 games and reaching the Division II College World Series three times. He was 94.

I think that leaves Bobby Doerr as the last living member of the 1946 Red Sox World Series team.

Never met Boo Ferriss, but I do know he was a tremendous ambassador for both the game of baseball and sports in his native Mississippi, and much beloved there. The award the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame gives each year to the best college player in the state is named in his honor.

Though it wasn't technically career-ending, Patriots RB Robert Edwards ruined his career when he blew out his knee in a beach flag football game the week of the 1998 Pro Bowl. They very nearly had to amputate his leg due to massive arterial damage, and he missed three full seasons before coming back with the Dolphins in 2002, but was never really the same.

And I remember Barry Larkin blowing out his elbow during the MLB All-Star skills competition one year, and missing like 3 months. They discontinued the event after that.
