How terrible. Nick was one of the sweetest guys you'd ever meet. Total surprise. He was filing daily from Ft. Myers.

Cafardo’s love of baseball and commitment to his craft compelled him to report to JetBlue Park, the spring training home of the Red Sox, on one of his rare days off. He was apparently stricken by an embolism at the park, and members of the Sox medical team were unable to revive him.

I was the atypical 11-year-old who listened to sports talk radio, so my first exposure to Nick (and Shaughnessy) was listening to a PM drive sports talk show.

I was amazed that these guys could talk sports for a living, and I said "that's what I want to do!"

I admired how Nick rose up, from the Enterprise to the Ledger, and then to a Boston paper. He's the last of that group that came up that way, him and Gerry Callahan.

I interacted with Nick once or twice, and the guy was patient and kind. May he rest in peace.

Really impressed with the Red Sox on this. Cora spoke unprompted for six minutes today on Cafardo, etc. Must have been a terrific guy to have earned that level of respect in baseball, in which relationships are invariably and almost inevitably strained by the daily grind and almost constant interaction.

Cora's comments were really genuine, nice and heartwarming. Nice job by him paying homage to Cafardo.
