Learning of Neil's death Saturday set me back a ton. What a great ball writer and person. I remember during the Earthquake World Series in 1989 when the power was gradually being restored in San Francisco and Neil and I got in a cab and asked the driver to take us anywhere we could get a COLD beer. The driver did and Neil and I had a great evening. He was a true credit to this profession, a beat writer always ready to "manage'' or help or laugh or commiserate and a truly fine, fine person.
