RIP Mike Bolton

Mike Bolton, longtime outdoors and sports writer for the Birmingham News, died late Friday night.

He battled some debilitating health issues the last few years. He fell at home sometime this week and hit his head, resulting in internal bleeding. A memorial service will be held at a future date.


And yes, he would laugh if you said, “Huh, the singer?”

He did the near impossible in coming out from the shadow of his dad Clyde (who was a fixture in the sports department of the News for decades) to create his own legend. He did well with stick and ball sports and very well with auto racing. But he had no peer in writing about the outdoors.

It’s been years since I baited a hook and the next hunting trip I take will be my first. But I never passed up a Mike Bolton column.
