RIP Mike Greenwell

Hall of Very Good former Red Sox. He was 62. Sounds like cancer.

It was cancer. Very sad news. I always liked Greenie. I remember the night in Cleveland he said, "I know 1986 was hard on our fans, but I wish they knew we didn't feel too good about it ourselves." Lot of sports psychology in that sentence.

He didn't have that kind of career, but he spent a decade there. A pretty good carrying of the baton. Then it was a couple of years of mixing and matching before looney tune Manny Ramirez took over. Pretty incredible lineage.

because of war not WAR! and injury, from 1940 to 1996 there are 10 seasons where the Boston left fielder is not Ted Williams, Yaz, Rice or Greenwell.
Through Manny it's 14 seasons without those five through 2008

I went back thinking he had a weak OBP early in his career which would explain his decline. That wasn't the case. At 29 he had 3.9 WAR with a healthy OBP. Then poof.

Cancer did what a Randy Johnson fastball couldn't. Was sitting behind first base circa '93 for the loudest HBP I've ever heard - good thing it hit high on his helmet, because a couple inches lower would've done some real damage.
Greenie got the last laugh. Big Unit left after six with a 6-1 lead. The Seattle bullpen blew it.
