RIP Mac Rebannack aka Dr. John

Son of a *****! I loved him. Not just his oft-played Top 40 hits, but more for his early stuff and his collaborations. His first album, "The Night Tripper," is unlike anything that came out when it did (1969, I think). "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" is the best known from that album. He also played quite a bit with The Band and he also was part of the all-star lineup at "The Last Waltz."

This blows.

Saw the great man once, when he headlined the short-lived jazz festival in my part of the Toronto 'burbs. Went on my own, got a single seat in the third row and he was awesome. RIP to a true original who embodied New Orleans music and culture as much as any musician who ever lived.

Nope. Looking Glass cutting "Brandy", Five Man Electrical Band doing "Signs", that's a one hit wonder.

Dr. John hit with with "Right Place, Wrong Time" in '73, but he really wasn't about singles. He did his thing, cut records, played live, played sessions, did duets, etc. Given that he first came to notice in 1969 and played until 2017 or 18. that's just not valid.
