Mike Garrett fired Gillespie after a 25-33 season in 2006. They hired Chad Kreuter, who was married to Gillespie's daughter.
A friend, whose son was a star player in the Phoenix area, was being recruited in the Pac-12. I was told that during the recruiting, Kreuter continually badmouthed the program, how bad it had become and they were going to turn it around. And his father-in-law was the coach!!!
My friend, who worked in professional baseball for nearly 50 years, including several years as a major league coach, thought it was strange that Kreuter was ripping Gillespie. But his son wanted to go to USC. He called Kreuter to confirm. Kreuter hemmed and hawed and told him he had to work out a couple of things, wait a week and call back. The kid waited one week and called Kreuter. He answered the phone, the kid identified himself and Kreuter hung up. The kid called back, no answer. He did that a couple of times.
The kid went to UCLA where he was an all-conference player on a team that went to the College World Series. Kreuter started the decline and the program hasn't recovered.
