When they ask, Why sports? Why High SchoolSports? You tell them about her,and about a thousand others like her across the country and across the decades. Anonymous to almost everyone outside their communities, they are what makes communities.
When you hear multimillionaire corp coaches are leaders of young people, tell them to go to hell. Calipari, Saban, Holtz, Kelly, Krzyzowski ... almost all are self serving money machines.

While becoming one of the country’s most accomplished high school field hockey coaches over 37 years at Severna Park, Lillian Shelton placed a Tupperware box of snacks near the front of her tiny office. That way, her players could grab food after school while heading to the locker room.
No Maryland coach in any sport has won more titles, according to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association record book. Shelton amassed a record of 544-60-10 over 37 seasons. She also led the Falcons to 31 county and 29 regional titles. USA Field Hockey Coach of the Year and Capital Gazette Coach of the Year many times over, Shelton is a member of the hall of fames at Severna Park, Anne Arundel County and National Field Hockey Association. She founded SPark indoor field hockey and the Field Hockey Junior League and co-founded the Maryland State Field Hockey Association and the Maryland State Games.
