I've driven through Archer City, Texas a few times. Always wanted to stop at McMurtry's bookstore there, Booked Up. I wonder if it'll stay open. Most towns of fewer than 2,000 people don't have a bookstore anymore.

Will second this. I read the book years after seeing the movie, and really felt both were fantastic.

The Last Picture Show could have been about literally hundreds of small towns in West Texas. They only hang on because of their 8-man football schools. McMurtry captured the vibe perfectly.
