I think he was an assistant coach or a player at Oregon when John McKay and George Seifert were there.

Don’t think I’d done the math to realize how young he was trading blows with imperial phase Bear Bryant. In my mind they were contemporaries but Robinson was in his 40s then, back when powerhouses didn’t routinely hand the car keys to young whippersnappers.

The first time I was stunned by a sporting event was the Flipper Anderson playoff game against the Giants. I can see him running down the tunnel to this day.

John Robinson also had that Sparky Anderson aging thing going. When he was coaching the Rams, I assumed that he was 70.

I always liked the story in one of Madden’s books where Bill Parcells, in his first year with the Giants, said he was nervous about telling Madden anything in their production meeting because he knew Madden and Robinson were good friends.

Madden told Parcells that he wouldn’t reveal secrets to anyone and that the first time that he ever did so, he’d get fired.

Madden told a story about trying to convince Robinson not to draft Dickerson. His reasoning was that Dickerson would have trouble running on grass. He kept saying this and Robinson finally said, “he can run on grass. He can run in a gravel pit. A beach. A wheat field. It won’t matter.”

Funny how, now that the old AstroTurf is gone, we never hear any more he's a "turf guy" assessments. If they have speed, it's apparent on natural turf or artificial surfaces.
