RIP John Crumpacker

Veteran sportswriter with the San Francisco Examiner, moving on to the Chronicle when Hearst bought the paper. Covered Cal and the 49ers, but his true love was track and field. His notebooks/travel logues from the Olympics, winter and summer, were loaded with local info. He just enjoyed the life.

I was on the Pac-12 Skywriters Tour three times with Packer ('83, '84 and '85). And, of course, I saw him when Cal played the SoCal schools. He went to Marshall High in L.A. before college at Cal. He certainly was a memorable guy, filled with stories. One of his irreverent ideas was creating the "Pac-10 All-Ugly Team." He went through the media guides and found the ugliest dudes, tore out the mugs and pasted them on a piece of paper into a football formation.
RIP, Packer.

Thanks for posting. I broke down and paid to read that.
Seemed like a great guy ... and my kind of reporter/writer - less interested in football's "inside baseball" than telling a good story likely to appeal to more than just diehard sports nerds.
