I'm surprised he made it to 77 as overweight as he was for so long. He had his warts, no question, but he was a lifer. 670-The Score in Chicago is going to have field day with this news. RIP.

Doubt you'll see this today knowing Jordan's feelings for Krause.
 
I thought he was older than that. He looked like he was in his mid-60s in the Bulls' heyday.
 
Considering the success Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson have had leading franchises, maybe Krause wasn't such a dumbass after all.

Shared a Double-A pressbox with Krause for a few hours in 2004 or 2005. I believe he was a scout for the Brewers. Much more friendly and interesting than I thought he'd be. Loved talking baseball, but wouldn't discuss his run with the Bulls. RIP.
 
He did a lot more than Jordan and the Chicago fan base would ever give him credit for. Pippen was a well-scouted pick. And everyone was up in arms when he traded Oakley for Cartwright, but the dynasty doesn't get going without that.

Why do you assume that? You think Phil, Jordan, Pippen and replacement center or Oakley at the 5 would be that much worse? Do you mean they wouldn't have played Grant? They seemed OK with Longley & Wennington.

They weren't going to survive with a 6-8 center, not in that era. Yeah, Oakley and Grant were redundant. Cartwright also had a mid-range game that fit the triangle (or at least got him out of the lane so the others could work).

Jordan as GM while playing wouldn't have been any better than Jordan as GM now. It's a very good thing that the Bulls had someone in charge who wouldn't listen to him.

Did you mean no dynasty without Krause or without Cartwright?

 
I meant Cartwright. (LOL by the way!) Not specifically him I suppose, but they needed to 1) move Oakley to clear the way for Grant; and 2) get a legit center.

Can't say I agree with that. I think the dynasty occurred despite that trade, not because of it. And it might've begun even earlier without it (I'd note the Bulls record was worse the year after the trade than before).

At least there's no doubt which guy was the vastly better player during the Bulls dynasty years. Krause traded a younger superior player for an older inferior guy simply because he was wedded to the (now largely debunked) notion that you must have a 7-footer in the middle. Personally, I'd much rather have a late 20s Oakley than a mid-30s Cartwright at ANY position, be it center, forward, wherever.

And, btw, it's amazing how many of the dumbest trades and picks from that era were caused by misguided 7-foot fever (see Bowie over Jordan as the most notorious example). It took the longest damn time for NBA execs to finally figure out that bigger often does not mean better.
