RIP Howard Stern Show?

I was in an Imus household through the 90s and never listened to Stern because he wasn’t syndicated in my market.

I would skip school to listen to Stern when we first got him in Pittsburgh. I feel like he was at the top of his game but the last time I tried listening he invited Beth into the room to yammer about something and I changed the channel.

I was an avid Howard listener when he got picked up by Q107 here in Toronto in the late 1990s. It was so much different than the Morning Zoo kind of **** we got on southern Ontario rock stations at the time. But Q eventually dropped him (probably for financial reasons) and replaced him with a guy who talked about jerking off, berated his interns and staff and instead of interviewing celebrities like Howard would, would try and place wake up calls to their hotel when they were in town filming a movie or something.

I don't listen to the radio much anymore but I came across the Q morning show the other day and they were having an endless discussion about one of them buying a beer fridge. I haven't listened to Howard in ages but it's got to be better than that.

The news keeps getting it wrong (although I don't expect much from realtor.com). The contract was a production contract so Stern got paid whatever was left over from making the show and I think a few other shows. He did okay, but he wasn't making $100M/year. Supposedly he paid Gary and the others very well.

I always like to joke that I followed Stern, but then I graduated from college. Truthfully, I would listen to his show on a station in San Diego now and then, but another station had a local morning crew that I really liked, so I usually listened to them on my way to work. My roommate and I would watch the syndicated TV show that was on for a year or two, and enjoyed it as a guilty pleasure, and that was when I became familiar with his cast of oddities (the Underdog lady was my favorite).

Outside the whole "shock jock" persona, I thought the guy was a decent interviewer (well, outside of that habit of interrupting his interview subject when they're trying to answer the damn question), and Iike still having someone of his stature to speak out against Trump and his sycophants.

Jackie leaving the show changed it. When it was no longer a show of equals, that killed a lot of it for me. Artie was just ok, but the way Howard treated Artie at the end was poor form. I think he’s forgotten that Fred, Gary, Robin, cheap-ass Tom C. and a lot of other people made him a lot of money.

It’s been 15 years since I listened to him, but a couple things he would do that would stand out.

I felt he was great at interviewing people. He would get people to share things that were amazing. Maybe it was because he had unlimited time with them, but his interviews were great.

He seemed to be the first radio host who would allow bands to play acoustical sets live. Probably due to not having time constraints, but he did have some amazing performances.

Like most shows, it’s the casting that matters. The few times I tuned in the last few years, it was him getting Ronnie the Limo Driver pissed off at something.

I started listening in the afternoons on WNBC. My mom said that I couldn’t listen because he was too dirty, but this latchkey kid certainly didn’t obey. From probably 1990-2007, I was a religious listener. As mentioned, the show dipped when he got richer and single. I was moving to the burbs around the time that he moved to Sirius and never made the switch. I will listen every now and then but it has been a long, long time.

There are only so many times you can make fun of Sal the Stock Broker, he's that much of an idiot.

Also, talk about not being relatable at all — come up with a different nickname. Sal the Schlub? Sal the Schlong?

(A lot of this on my end is middle-aged-man-yelling-at-the-clouds, I know.)

I first became aware of him through the E! show, and only was exposed to him after he moved to Sirius/XM.

He definitely needed to evolve from what he was (juvenile feuds, strippers, "Wendy the R-word", etc.), and at his core can be a very strong interviewer.

But you can make the case that he has become the very thing he railed against during the Imus years. He's become lazy (3 days a week? Come on), working from his basement after Covid is ridiculous, and every time I've tried to give him another shot over the last year or so, it's been discussion of him trying to learn the guitar and having his wife on there talking about rescuing cats.

I'd gladly listen to hours and hours of ripping on Sal for being stupid, Baba Booey for whatever, and making Ronnie lose his temper over the garbage it seems to be now. I don't know, maybe my random "check-ins" have only been during the show's bad days?
