I loved Night Court as a kid. I loved it even more as a junior prosecutor in an urban courtroom. It was far closer to reality than I had ever imagined.

I must be a drop behind you because for me it was all that and LA Law. The day that NBC realized that they could split them up and still get great ratings for crap like a different world and Veronica's closet was a step backward.

This one hurts. What a great character. Time to search YouTube for a little Mel Torme.

Loved that show. My favorite scene was when Phil, the courthouse vagrant, died and they found out he was wealthy.

Character 1: "Phil gave a lot of money to the New York harmonic."

Character 2: "Don't you mean the Philharmonic?"

Character 1: "Yeah, now."

My family used to make pizza and watch the first four together. We did that for years. Some of my happiest childhood memories. Night Court was always my favourite.

I’m a little (cough, cough) older than you, but my Thursday night appointment TV started with Taxi ... it also meandered through St. Elsewhere.

Man, this one hurts. I actually first came upon Anderson when SNL would have him on to do his comedy magician act.

Cosby and Cheers got most of the attention from that Thursday night comedy block, but I found Night Court to be consistently laugh-out-loud funny, and its humor definitely earned it its 9:30 p.m. time slot.
Dan Fielding may have been the breakout character from that show, but the Harry Stone character I felt was the glue that held it together. RIP.

I'm sure there were others who merged comedy with magic before him, figure Penn and Teller came along about the same time, but first noticed him on a Dangerfield special.

Mel's daughter, Tracey Torme, worked with the show. That's how he kept ending up on it and eventually became a running gag.

+cainster Firstly, Tracy Torme is a man. And while he worked in TV, he never worked on Night Court; he did mostly scifi shows like Sliders, ST: TNG, and Odyssey 5. Mel ended up on Night Court when, by coincidence, Harry Anderson was revealed to be as big a fan as the character Harry Stone.
