NEW YORK -- Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter said doctors discovered four "very small" brain tumors after he had an MRI on Friday in Florida.
The 57-year-old Carter said he expects to learn more about his diagnosis when he is examined again Thursday at Duke Medical Center.

Weird, very weird, that he would "announce" this so soon.

Re: Gary Carter diagnosed with small brain tumors

Good luck to Gary.

Re: Gary Carter diagnosed with small brain tumors

Are "small" brain tumors like "mild" concussions, heart attacks or strokes? Any is too much.

Good luck to Carter and his family. Hopefully the outcome is better than we might fear.

Not being flippant (for a change) but I wonder if he used a cell phone a lot? The cancer he has was one I had not heard of until yesterday's cell-phone-causes-cancer-story.

Re: Gary Carter diagnosed with small brain tumors

Per the NY Times, it's the same time of brain cancer that struck Bobby Murcer, Tug McGraw, **** Howser, Dan Quisenberry and Johnny Oates. Make me wonder if there isn't some sort of correlation with chewing tobacco use being a causation (I know - small sample size and I don't even know how many, or any, of those players chewed).

As someone whose dad was killed by brain cancer, all I can do is say to cross your fingers and hope in the latest treatments.

Re: Gary Carter diagnosed with small brain tumors

I know some kids with glioblastoma. Nasty, nasty, nasty disease. It's actually the most common type of brain tumor according to the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glioblastoma_multiforme

And multiple tumor sites make it even worse.

Re: Gary Carter diagnosed with small brain tumors

Glioblastoma mulitforme is the most common malignant brain tumor and as the one that also killed Ted Kennedy. The latest study about cell phone use and brain cancer risk put it at the level of being near a microwave. Still too early to tell but bluetooth or ear piece use can't hurt. Remember that the phone manufacturers recommend holding the phone a half inch or more away from your ear when using it.

Glioblastoma is uniformly fatal and the survival after diagnosis is measured in months. Appreciated these statistics are from 2003 but because Gary Carter cannot undergo surgery, his median survival is 7 1/2 months, his one year survival is 28% and three year is only 1%.

Re: Gary Carter diagnosed with small brain tumors

Gary Carter's battle with brain cancer took a positive turn yesterday, when doctors determined that new spots recently discovered were benign, according to the former Mets catcher's daughter, Kimmy Bloemers.

"We are praising the heavens for more victories!" Bloemers wrote in her online journal. "Thank you all for the prayers and encouraging cheers for dad! Keep them coming!!!"

Bloemers also said the Hall of Famer was due to finish his second round of chemotherapy last night.

"Dad has been extremely tired during these days of chemo, which has been expected," Bloemers wrote. "After he finishes his last pill tonight, he will start to do more activity for his body. The doctor has emphasized exercise, healthy food intake and rest when needed. Dad will start to do physical therapy to get his joints and muscles moving as he pushes through the exhaustion."

Re: Gary Carter diagnosed with small brain tumors

Daily News reports his condition has worsened. More tumors found on his brain:

Damn.

Re: Gary Carter diagnosed with small brain tumors

That is less awesome news. This sounds like the doctors are not very optimistic at all. Awful, just awful.

Re: Gary Carter diagnosed with small brain tumors

Just saw a tweet from Richard Sandomir saying that according to Carter's daughter, he has died.

(Edit, now seeing it everywhere else. 57 years old, so sad.)

From the Hall of Fame:

HALL OF FAME CATCHER GARY CARTER PASSES AT AGE 57

(COOPERSTOWN, NY): Gary Carter, elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame after a 19-year big league career with the Expos, Mets, Giants and Dodgers, passed away peacefully on Thursday in his home state of Florida after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was 57.

Carter, known affectionately as “The Kid” for his boundless enthusiasm on and off the field, passed away with his family nearby.

“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter,” said Jane Forbes Clark, Chairman of the Board of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. “Gary’s enthusiasm, giving spirit and infectious smile will always be remembered in Cooperstown. Our thoughts are with Sandy, Christy, Kimmie, DJ and the entire Carter family on this very sad day.”

Carter was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2003. An 11-time All-Star Game selection, Carter powered the New York Mets to the 1986 World Series title.

“When you think of the great baseball field generals, you think Gary Carter,” said Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson. “He ran the game from behind the plate with strong leadership and passion. The Kid's contribution to our National Pastime is big, but his heart was even bigger. We’ll always remember his caring way, ever-present smile and strong devotion to family, community and the Baseball Hall of Fame.”

Information on funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.

Re: Gary Carter diagnosed with small brain tumors

Godspeed, #8. We just buried my uncle last weekend after cancer took him at age 54.

Cancer sucks.
