Terrible news for this Phillies fan. Can never forget the first World Series title ever for a franchise in almost a century, and he was a big reason why it happened. Also, a fellow Delawarean.

Growing up in a "Phillies Phan Phamily," Dallas Green was a damn legend. I remember when he went to manage the Yankees, my dad predicted he would make them winners again.

Dallas Green is one of those guys who, like Earl Weaver or Billy Martin, I would love to hear inside baseball stories from the old beat guys. I think Paul Owens brought in Dallas because Danny Ozark, while very successful, couldn't win the big one and certainly wasn't the rabble-rouser that Dallas was. Dallas came right in and told the veterans what's up, and it sure as hell worked.

If I recall correctly, Dallas Green's granddaughter was killed in the attack at the Gabby Giffords rally in Arizona. I think she was 9 or 10. Such a sad memory for an old man to carry with him to the grave.

He was awesome. Ripped the **** out of everyone on that team in private except Rose (every manager's dream as a player). I'm not sure it worked as much as Rose taking the heat off Mike Schmidt as a team leader, but can't argue with the results. Team that had gagged away playoffs galore were nails in 1980.

The only starter on the '84 team that made his major league debut with the Cubs was catcher Jody Davis, who never spent a day in the team's minor league organization. He was a Rule 5 draftee from the Cardinals.

Had to go back and look at the roster but the only guy who came up thru the Cubs minor league system who was a regular contributor of any kind was Lee Smith.

Well, unless you count Mel Hall and Joe Carter, who contributed by being traded for Rick Sutcliffe.

Correct. Unfortunately. Cactus League is all around Phoenix now, but a couple of teams would hit the Interstate every spring to play a fundraising game down there.
