Hall of Fame pitcher Bruce Sutter dies at 69

Teams were using closers by the time he came around, but Sutter refined the role.

He just owned the Expos. When he came in, Duke and Dave all but told us to shut the game off.

And pronounced differently than the six NHL Sutter brothers, although I've heard both used for John Sutter (Suter) of California gold rush fame. (Like long-time WRAL sportscaster Tom Suiter.)

The only member of the Florida State League Key West Conchs to make the Baseball Hall of Fame, so far. RIP to the man who made the splitter famous.

Between Sutter and Quisenberry, Missouri baseball fans had some great closers in the early 80s. And now they’re both gone. RIP.

And Detroit's John Hiller, who missed the 1971 season after a heart attack at 27, will turn 80 in April.
