I interviewed Henny Youngman one hot Friday afternoon in the summer of 1983, riding along with him in a limo taking him from mIdtown to a comedy club in Wesport, Conn. I was 25 and in my first year at AP. Henny made us stop at Carnegie Deli for a tongue sandwich. Traffic out of town was at a standstill. He got surlier by the minute. About halfway through what should have been an hour trip to Westport that took four hours, I was struggling to keep the discussion going. Finally, he stops and says, "How come they didn't send Bob Thomas, anyway?"

Bob was a wire service legend.
