A really great guy. Had the pleasure of talking to him several times in recent years in the crowd at UW-Milwaukee basketball games as he was watching his son, Rob, coach.

He really got into the games and would pace around the arena ... even more than Pearl's dad did when Bruce was there.

Rob found out during practice yesterday, and immediately left for Chicago. Actually, a local TV station called Milwaukee's SID to seeking comment ... turns out they didn't even know about it yet.

Rob plans on coaching UWM on Saturday against Marquette.

As a kid growing up in the 60s in Milwaukee, I was just a neophyte Packer fan when they were winning Super Bowls I and II. Jeter made an interception in a game and I thought the announcer was calling him "Cheater." I was 6 or 7 at the time, but it's one of my first Packer memories.

Where he was MVP of the 1959 game, after running for 194 yards on only nine carries. That total included an 81-yard touchdown in the Hawkeyes' 38-12 dismantling of Cal.

We just re-wrote the official Rose Bowl program and '59 was one of my years. ;D
