Barneys Is Sold for Scrap, Ending an Era

I was in NYC when the Indians played the Yankees and Mets in August. A friend works for the Indians TV station, so I met up with him after one of the games. As we were walking back toward his hotel, we ran into Sandy Alomar and his wife, who my friend knew from working the games for years.

After talking about the game, my friend introduced me to the couple. After some more small talk, I asked if they had any tourist plans for their off day. Mrs. Alomar burst into a huge smile and shouted, "Barney's!" Sandy shook his head and said and she repeated it, along with a couple other high-end shops I don't remember. "I'm on a coach's salary now," said Sandy.

I hope she got her Barney's fix. And that Sandy gets a raise.

Barney’s was an LA institution as well; not so much for the shopping but for the power lunch spot for Michael Ovitz and other top CAA and William Morris agents back in the day.

Hands down the best iced tea anywhere. Mmmmmm

When they only had the Chelsea store and had the annual Warehouse sale, it was an utter zoo. I got all of my suits and shirts there. Then they got too fancy for their own good and opened the Madison Ave store.

In theory, this is the type of business that should be making money hand over fist in today's Manhattan. Even with the rents, how many multi-millionaires live in the ctiy now? I'm not a retail expert but do even they buy on-line?
