RIP, Barbara Bush

Know it's on the politics thread but probably deserves its own if we can keep it civil.

Not looking good for the 92-year-old; comfort care only. Married 73 years.

Jenna Bush Hager on Today show this morning: Jenna Bush Hager calls grandmother Barbara Bush ‘a fighter’ in emotional ‘Today’ show interview

She was the one who stood up for Hager when the young woman stuck her tongue out to reporters during the 2004 presidential campaign. When Hager joked that her grandmother had been wanting to do the same for years, the outspoken former first lady jokingly answered, “Every American has.”

In modern times I can't think of a first lady more loved/respected from both sides of the aisle. Conservatives had Nancy Reagan, liberals had Michelle Obama, but everyone thought highly of Barbara Bush.

Hoping for the best for her.

Thinking back, there was some controversy. She did call Hillary a ***** without saying it during the campaign. She was known to be the steel behind George HW - she was known as a tough bird. But the Bushes - even if you disagreed with their politics - were difficult to really dislike. HW is on the short-list of greatest one-term Presidents. He got caught in a bad economic cycle/the LA riots and he was facing a Dem candidate unlike any the GOP had ever encountered.

She is dying of what killed my mother in December 2016. Hospice care makes it as painless as such a thing can be, but her window for consciousness to see her very large family is probably not more than this week in a best case scenario.

A great American who is beloved on both sides of the aisle. You know it's coming, but you hope she has as much care as possible in the final days, surrounded by her family, which sounds like is the case. My grandparents on my mother's side went through similar circumstances. You want it quick and as painless as possible. Godspeed.
