That stinks. I read many of the Vampire Chronicles books when I was in the Navy.
RIP

I've always felt a little sad for her. She was someone we would have called a continual searcher in another time. The vampire novels were originally a way to work through her grief over a lost child. Her emotional and spiritual journeys were always wrestled out through her fiction. To me, her life made her work interesting.

I went to one of her book signings at a Books A Million near my home. She was in costume, and was incredibly gracious and patient with her fans. I'm an old hand at SF/Fantasy conventions and hardcore geek and wierdo fandoms, and the folks in that line were out there even by my standards. She was so kind, there was no trace of impatience or arrogance about her. That line began to form the day before the signing, which I have never seen for any other author's book signing.

She had a gift for imagining the inner life and motivations of people who were trapped in a powerful but tragic unlife, and she wrote their stories well. Rest well, lady.
