Sports Reporter—Full Time
Richmond Times-Dispatch is looking for a talented writer and reporter to take responsibility for all aspects of a major-college beat in addition to any other general assignment duties that are needed. Must be able to work effectively with photographers, graphic artists, on-line staff and page designers. Must be multimedia savvy. Must keep up with the day-to-day operation of the beat, create sources and stay ahead of the competition. May be called on occasionally to fill in on other assignments.
Skills & Qualifications: College degree or equivalent experience required. Should have 3 years of daily newspaper experience, preferably at a daily of 100,000-plus. Should have demonstrated proficiency in English and a strong general knowledge of sports. Must have a valid driver's license and be willing to do extensive travel. Must be able to balance many tasks at once. Must be able to ensure that there are on-line components to stories. Must be able to cover breaking news whenever it happens. Must be able to communicate with colleagues and editors and work as part of a team. Must be able to take constructive criticism and direction but also generate plenty of story ideas. Must be able to meet deadlines. Must have demonstrated journalistic skills including an understanding of accepted journalistic practices. Must be willing to work night and weekends. Requires end user computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel), and Microsoft Internet Explorer; Harris NewsMaker a plus.
Hours: 40 hours a week; schedule varies
