Relocating for a new job

Don't be surprised if they say no. I moved about 8 hours away for my last job and there was no money for relocation. They figured there were a lot of out of work journos out there and they could get someone who would pay for it themselves if I didn't.

But at least they were up front about it.

But, I mean, that's 8 hours. In this climate it's not all that surprising (or stupid, for that matter) that you were turned down. You'll probably need a good multiple-state haul to warrant a cash-strapped paper forking over a few bills for the relocation. I crossed seven states and didn't even get $1,000.

Well, it was multiple states (four to be exact). And I'm not complaining, I was simply telling the person who started the thread not to expect anything. I've interviewed at many papers both near and far and have yet to find one that offered relocation money. But maybe I just have bad luck...

I grew up as a pastor's kid, and I think the longest I ever lived in once place was four years. I feel weird if I don't relocate every few years.

Same here. Never really had a hometown. My dad was a senior manager for a company that built power plants, so he'd move every 2-3 years and we'd all go along.

Then I became an adult and got into this nomadic career. Oh, well, I've seen 42 states, 4 provinces and part of Mexico. Australia is still on the 'someday' list.

Some will pay. Some will not. Just ask. It's to your benefit. If you don't open your mouth.....

Of course, these days any job offer is reason to jump up and down, but before, I would have considered no moving expenses to be a dealbreaker. I've never had a company refuse to reimburse those, even when they were offering pay that most people on here would howl at.

I get what he was saying, but the moment I read that, I started thinking of D.L. Hughley's skit on Kerry Collins knowing the exact number of black people he's had in his house.

I've probably moved six times in my 15-year career ... kind of the same average as Trooper Bari ... and only used a moving van twice. The last few times, I've basically taken what would fit in my car ... I usually had used furniture anyway ...

I'm hoping to move again soon ... and depending on the proximity, I'd like to take all my stuff. I'll have to see, though.
