random question re: reality shows

How do the people who go on these reality shows that require big time commitments get the time off from work? I have a feeling that if I ever got a chance to be on one, I'd have to quit my job because my paper wouldn't let me just leave. Or they just wouldn't let me come back when my TV time was finished.

And of course they wouldn't fill the opening my departure would create, but that's a different thread for a different day.

I'm assuming these shows pay. And if they do, someone could max their time off, then take unpaid time.

And as long as that person doesn't make a complete ass of themselves, their jobs might be glad to have them back for visibility sake.

I think the former Alabama football player who had a job at a Florida college was fired after taking too much time off for "The Biggest Loser" last season.

Take vacation and unpaid leave.
The last paper I worked at let me take five weeks off - three weeks of vacation and two weeks of unpaid leave - to go to Nigeria in 2002.
I think my current job would allow me to do the same.
