OK, sorry. I wasn't trying to be difficult or talk out of school or anything.

In a business where people can be awfully miserable, I never saw Jauss one time not look like he wasn't having the time of his life doing this job.

Haven't seen him in years (geographic issues), but knew him, and the guy was always an absolute prince to me.

As a kid, I watched Bill every week on the "Sportswriters on TV" on Channel 32 in Chicago.

I grew up wanting to be a sportswriter partly because of that show.

I met Mr. Jauss many years later during a NCAA first-round women's basketball game at Purdue. The guy was an absolute gentleman and just as nice as he was on TV. He had no reason to pay any attention to me, a college kid covering his first real tourney game. But he was helpful, friendly and a professional.

This is sad. Even when he was arguing with Telander or Gleason, he seemed to have a smile on his face.

hope his suffering is minimal. by far the best of the sportswriter shows. wish it would be recirculated via reruns so youngin's could see how truly entertaining, smart and snarkless some of us can be.

in fairness, i suppose today's screaming lamebrains are giving today's tv producers what they want to entertain a severely dumb-downed audience.

A few years back Northern Illinois had a spot in the press box for him and his wife. It was a classy move by them for a classy man. I know that arrangement might strike some as odd or somehow improprietous, but if you met Bill Jauss you'd never have such a thought.

Boy does that bring up some great college days memories. Thanks. The wafting smoke and Chi-Town drawl always had me mesmerized, and watching that, they still do.

Sad to hear.

We crossed paths a few times when I was in college at the student paper and he couldn't have been nicer.

A couple of years later I pull into the parking lot for a Northern Illinois football game and Bill's getting out -- a car you would expect him to be driving, beat to hell and looking like he kissed the wall on the Eisenhower -- and remembered me even though we hadn't shared a press box in a while.

I hope for the best for him. First-class guy, and a writer whose byline I read in the Tribune for many years.

Our paths actually crossed early in my career, when he came over for an Iowa-Northwestern football game, and unlike some of the older Iowa beat writers, he treated me like a veteran and had a few good stories to share.
